I'm bowing out of the second round of [livejournal.com profile] thing_in_150, at least for now. I wasn't really ready to start again at the beginning of August and I haven't been able to get back into the rhythm since, and now, between work commitments and falling into what looks like a major plot hole, I just can't keep it up. This doesn't mean I'm giving up on writing again; it just means that I need to do it at my own pace for a while.

The good news is that this probably means more reading and more interesting content here.

And [livejournal.com profile] thing_in_150 is over, at least the first round.

Behemoth 47 is at 31,117 words, and I'm at the point where I wonder whatever gave me the idea I could write, let alone write novels. (I couldn't characterize my way out of a wet paper bag, and whatever voice I once had has disappeared into a morass of cliches, that kind of thing.) The story's at an interesting enough place that I'm not really tempted to give up, though.
ellarien: black tile dragon (china)
One of the treasures of the Forbidden City in Beijing is the Nine Dragon Screen, a beautiful piece of tilework depicting nine exuberant dragons, black, yellow and white. Along the top of the wall, there are more dragons, tiny green ones, which I'm not sure I even noticed at the time, but I spotted them in one of my photos.

One of the scenes in Ambassador takes place in front of that screen. I've been thinking about those little dragons, and snooping aliens, and Hawaii's rat problem, the last couple of days. And out of that, I end up with a scene in which an angry and somewhat self-important minor character kills what he thinks is a rat in his bunk ...

I'm up to 18,925 words, still behind on my [livejournal.com profile] thing_in_150 commitment for the week, but hoping to make some real progress over the weekend, if I can fit it in with all the housework and shopping that really ought to happen. (I need both dishwasher and laundry detergent as well as food, so I'll probably have to make two grocery runs.)

ellarien: writing is ... (writing)
I've joined [livejournal.com profile] thing_in_150, whereby I undertake to write 500 words every day for the next five months. I think that's about my speed, if I can keep it up.

My 'thing' will be to finish:
  • Undone, the story I started at Christmas, currently at 14,278 words

  • Defector, started in 2001, currently at 7458 words.

  • Vortex, started in 1997, currently at 13,860 words.

If the experience of working on Undone has taught me anything, it's that I'm hopeless at projecting length, but I think 20,000 words should take care of those three. After that, there's Behemoth 47, the 'real' novel I've been planning off and on for the last few years. It would be nice to finish a draft of that this year, but if I'm not ready I have a few other ideas.

Mission Statement

Reading, writing, plant photography, and the small details of my life, with digressions into science and computing.
