It broke 100 degrees in Tucson today, for the first time this year. Classes are over, and the campus was eerily quiet. The landscapers whipped out the wilted pansies around the building where I work, and replaced them with zinnias, which are somewhat more summer-proof. On my way home, I was chatting with a security guard who had stopped to admire the new flowers, and mentioned that I grew up in England. So, as one does, she asked me if I'd ever seen the Queen.

As it happens, I have. Twice. After all, it's a fairly small country, and being seen is in a sense her job, so the odds against it aren't that high.

The first time was on purpose, and it happened on this wise. )

The second time, almost twenty years later, was more or less by accident, and this was the manner of it. )

Because [livejournal.com profile] mrissa reminded me. It would be nice to get back there one of these days.

London

This hotel lobby terminal is not only expensive but slow, so I'll be brief.

I've made it to London, had my visa-approved photograph taken, and located my hotel in the mazes of Bayswater. Central London seemed a bit quieter than usual, and the tube was half-empty, but otherwise things seem fairly normal -- and I should have brought my sunglasses.

Tomorrow I go to the US Embassy for my visa appointment.

This morning's NPR story on the 2-minute silence in London today contained not one but two howlers that make me wonder about their reporter on the spot (not permanently posted in the UK, apparently -- on July 7th he was reporting on soccer-playing illegal aliens in Turkey). I went and listened to it again on the web because I couldn't believe what I thought I heard him say.

First, there's a reference to the 'National Cathedral' in Trafalgar Square. That would, presumably, be the National Gallery, possibly somewhat conflated with the church next door. Okay, I suppose someone who'd never been to London before might confuse it with St. Paul's Cathedral ...

Then came the reference to Charles Clarke as 'Security Chief' and 'Homeland Secretary'. I suppose there is some overlap between the modern duties of the Home Secretary and those of the US Secretary of Homeland Security, but it's a very old office, mostly concerned with domestic law enforcement.

I hasten to add that I'm sure British reporters -- possibly even the BBC -- can mangle American nuances just as badly, but ... aargh.

I feel very British tonight. Not in a jingoistic way, just ... a sense of recognition, the same that I get when I see the faces and hear the voices as people gather at the departure gate for a flight back to the UK. I recognize the way Londoners are reacting, in a way that I didn't recognize the reactions of some Americans four years ago.

It must be beginning to be daylight in London by now. My heart goes out to the people waking up to face another day -- those who have to deal with grief, pain, uncertainty over loved ones, raw nerves or just the decision of how or whether they're going to get to work today. And I have faith that the country of my birth will continue to be itself.

And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] brisingamen for the pointer to [livejournal.com profile] jslayeruk's brilliant icon!

Sigh.

I'm glad that [livejournal.com profile] brisingamen and her [livejournal.com profile] peake are safe, and [livejournal.com profile] mrissa and her travelling companions. This morning I fired off e-mails to my old boss, whose wife and child are still in London, and my contact at the church I used to attend there, and everyone there is OK too. So, I'm fairly sure that I'm not personally touched by this morning's tragic and horrible events, even indirectly.
