The warm weather is bringing out butterflies -- and wasps -- that probably should be dormant by now.

There didn't seem to be many butterflies around in England, though we did start seeing more tortoiseshells, at least, the last few days I was there. This little thing is a Large Skipper, sitting still -- not something that happens very often -- at Longshaw Park last Tuesday.

I spotted this one in the course of my lunchtime perambulations around the observatory; it was enjoying the thistle, and stayed there for quite a while as I snapped shot after shot.

There are quite a lot of butterflies up here. The big yellow-and-black and black-and-white swallowtails will flutter temptingly close, but not pose; this smaller, paler specimen obligingly lighted on a flower by the roadside when I went for a solitary stroll after lunch today.

And introducing my Flickr account. ([livejournal.com profile] intertext talked me into it!)

This one was in the tropical exhibit, but there were others flying free outside. The other specimens were more exotic.

Busy Day

I feel as though I've been running around all day. I started off by catching the bus down to the office to pick up a package and next month's bus pass; then, after a quick lunch, I popped down to the grocery store for a few things. After that, I headed to big-box-land for yarn and socks and a keyboard and some seasonal gifts of the digital kind. Since then, I've been futzing around between living room and study, decomissioning the old desktop, installing the printer and the creaky old scanner on Real Laptop, and getting Old Laptop and Real Laptop to talk to one another again. (I had a nice little home network set up about a year ago; then I installed AOL on the desktop, and it stopped talking to the other machines. Then there was the disk crash, of course, that set Real Laptop back to factory defaults.) I'm pretty much set now, I think, except that I forgot to pick up a floppy drive; Real Laptop can take over the load from the desktop, and I'm ready to be a two-computer instead of three-computer household again.

It looks as though Scrapbook is working better today, except that a couple of my recent photos seem to have gone missing. If they don't show up soon, I might try deleting and reloading them. Otherwise, I seem to have mostly escaped the moving glitches; one comment notification went missing, and things were slow for a while, but all my icons stayed put.

(Edit: sigh. I went and reuploaded the photos, and now they're fine but the userpic based on one of them has gone awol.)

(Edit2: Never mind. All better now.)

As an experiment, here's my new desktop wallpaper:

Butterfly!

There a lot of these around, and they really like the lantana flowers. They aren't much given to basking with their wings open: mostly they flap gently or sit with the wings upright and together.

I finally caught one in the open position!

I checked the bookstore at lunchtime, but there were no piles of Jordan tomes. This wasn't all that surprising -- they're not great at getting new things in promptly, and Anansi Boys only appeared there yesterday. I'm not exactly short of reading matter, anyway.

The tracking info on my Amazon package, containing Anansi Boys, [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija's book, and the Season 8 Stargate DVDs, has finally been updated; it passed through Denver some time today.

We had another beautifully clear, relatively cool day. I swished around feeling rather Edwardian in a purple skirt nearly to my ankles. This one has a chain belt, the loose end of which makes a wonderful fidget-toy.

And then there was this: they're even prettier on the right side, but not keen to display themselves for the camera.
