Just heard this bad news from Tucson on BBC radio.

Not "shot dead", but shot in the head can't be good.

Edit: And some media are reporting her death, according to Twitter. This is just awful. Edit2: Reports of the Congresswoman's death now definitely seem to have been exaggerated; latest is that she's out of surgery in critical condition.

I had never heard of this lady, but according to filkertom she was actually on several Tea Party (supposedly joking!)'hit lists', including Palin's.

Apparently Ms. Palin's list has been taken down.

Congresswoman Giffords is the representative for the area where I lived in Tucson (and the shooting happened not many miles from my apartment there). I knew it had to be her before the BBC even said the name.

It is always a worse shock when you know the people and places involved, even if you aren't there - and you must have also been worried about your friends and colleagues at the University. I remember the confusion and shock here in London during the tube attacks on 7/7, but this is London and you sort of expect this kind of thing occasionally.
