The center-right pile-let consists of books I'm currently bogged down in; the rest are just waiting their turn. Maybe now that I'm done with the year's travel, I'll be able to settle down with hardcovers more often.
I think I was traumatized by long summer holidays when we only got to the library once or twice a week; I once got the backlog down to under 30 books, but it made me twitch because I had so little choice of what to read next.
My TBR pile is bigger than that. What I want to know is why a book that was wonderful and shiny when you ordered it doesn't look as exciting when it's been sitting on your shelf for six months?
I can think of a couple of reasons for that, at least in my case. For one, by then something else new and shiny has come along; for another, most of the discussion and excitement will have died down. I'm running a year behind now -- there's at least one instance where I've bought book three of a series before reading book two!

Though, quite often I have a bunch of neglected work I was supposed to do instead of reading. :P
