Nice young man turned up a couple of hours ahead of schedule. The problem turned out to be the ancient barrel connector on the main line coming into the apartment. Everything's working now, though I've only just figured out that I needed to power-cycle the cable modem to get it talking nicely to the wireless router again. He also insisted on rejigging my TV/VCR/DVD setup so the DVD goes into the VCR rather than using a separate RF modulator. (Really, really basic 19" TV, with nothing but a plain coax input.) I'm not sure I like this; it means switching on the VCR to watch DVDs, which probably eats more power than the little modulator gizmo, and is an extra step, but right now I'm tired of fiddling with connectors, so I'll leave it that way for a while.)

Sigh. Not the way I wanted to spend two days of my vacation, really.

Also, the end result of being home for two weeks, relying entirely on my own catering, and not being in a domesticated mood, is that I've lost four or five pounds I couldn't really spare, and I'm hungry.

Firefox's spell-checker recognizes "VCR" but not "DVD."

Edit: OK. It turns out that the wizard wheeze of running the DVD player through the VCR didn't actually produce watchable video. This could be why I had it set up with the RF modulator in the first place. It's now back the way it was, except that the gizmo is on the wrong side of the setup.
