Today is the second anniversary of my journal.

I'm on vacation, my annual sanity break for catching up with domestic things that don't get done otherwise. Soon I'll be heading out to see if I can sort out some new glasses. I still can't find the other half of the old pair.

I must have been a bit too warm last night; I was having some odd and vivid dreams, including one in which a very small nuclear strike had taken out downtown Tucson, all two blocks of it. That probably has something to do with having watched 'War of the Worlds' on the SciFi Channel on Saturday.

I went to the Lenscrafters in the mall, got myself tested, picked out new frames, and collected the new glasses by the end of the afternoon. It turns out that my eyes are basically healthy, the astigmatism is slightly worse, as is the near-sightedness (which meant that the ancient spare pair was actually closer to right than the ones that broke, as the last couple of prescriptions went the other way), and I don't yet need bifocals/separate reading glasses but probably will in a couple of years. I ended up with polycarbonate lenses, because the glass ones would have taken a couple of weeks, and frames that are slightly smaller than my old ones but big enough to still feel like me. I like them, I think.

I also treated myself to a small selection of clip-on earrings from the Macy's sale, and a new pair of slippers, as it's the season for them.

The laptop took advantage of being left online all afternoon to download IE7, which I have no particular intention of using but let it install anyway.

Irony

Today's Voyage episode was the S1 The Village of Guilt, a.k.a. the one with the overgrown octopus. I laughed out loud when Captain Crane said that even if he saw a sea monster he wouldn't believe it, and Nelson solemnly told him that they did exist, but were only six or seven inches long. This was, I suppose, the first episode with aquatic megafauna, but by no means the last.

I'm falling for this show all over again, I really am. I did wonder about the tropical reef fish in a Norwegian fjord, though.
