ellarien: doily (crochet)
I finished the last piece of a very long-running (since 1999) crochet project tonight -- not that I've been working on it very steadily; the last two of six pieces took about ten days of odd moments. Now I just have to weave in all the ends and join the pieces together, and that's another five pounds or so of Red Heart Super Saver yarn no longer taking up space in my bedroom.

I like to think of myself as a fairly experienced crocheter, but almost all my experience is in thread doilies, worked in the round with small steel hooks. This has given me a rather cavalier attitude to gauge, because really, who cares exactly how big a doily is, as long as it's pretty? For various reasons, however, I want to make an afghan -- something fairly straightforward and with no sewing up, preferably. Last night I thought I had it all lined up, and I embarked on a simple ripple pattern. Of course, it turned out not to be quite that simple. )

It seems counterintuitive, but the patterns that give me the most trouble seem to be the ones involving large expanses of single crochet. I think I may have to rip out the last few rows of the current doily again; I can't see where I picked up a couple of extra stitches, but I have my suspicions.
