• It never occurred to me, when shopping for giftwrap, that I should have checked it for transparency.



• Two vending-machine bottles of Frappucino, decanted into styrofoam cups and microwaved for a minute per cup, make a not completely undrinkable substitute for coffee for three people, when the coffee vending machine is down. Much too sweet, though.



• On the median of Glendale Avenue stands a small white cross, memorial to some traffic fatality. This morning it was wreathed, not in flowers or foliage, but in a thick scarlet tinsel garland.
