Meisha Merlin is small, and slow -- I'm still waiting for another book of theirs that was originally scheduled for last November -- but they do make nice books; good quality paper and real cloth on the binding rather than textured paper.
Crystal Soldier is the first of a prequel duology to the Liaden stories, from before Liad existed. The galaxy is at war, and the other side has weapons that can destroy entire swathes of space. The scale, and the stakes, are bigger than in most of the Liaden Universe novels so far, though the individual scenes, in bars and spaceports and spaceships, are much the same. It's interesting to spot the origins of the Yxtrang and the dramliz, and the young Tree is a character in its own right.
I enjoyed this, but it's going to seem like a long wait for the other half of the story, which, coincidentally, was just finished today.
