We made it back, though the connection in San Diego was a bit tight for comfort. The terminal was small -- but to get from Gate 1 to Gate 7 we had to go out of the security zone, across a dinky little ticket hall and back in through security on the other side. (Apparently the earthquake authorities won't let them build a bridge and the fire marshals won't allow a tunnel.) I think I may have gone through security in more of a hurry once -- that time in Frankfurt on the way to Romania -- but it was a near thing. I kicked off my shoes, whipped out the laptop and put it in a bin, leaving its sleeve to go through loose on the belt, threw my waist pouch, passport, jacket and necklace in another bin, and went through the metal detector with my watch and rings still on. (Usually I take them off and put them in the waist pouch and the waist pouch in the backpack before I get near the security line.) All this was with about ten minutes to spare before the scheduled departure time; I actually made it to my designated spot in the boarding line, and all five of us made it onto the plane.
It's almost one of those Dear Abby or Miss Manners questions -- when traveling with a group of unrelated, able-bodied adults, none of whom depend on me for anything, should I miss my flight when I could have caught it, in order to stay with the group? In this instance, I couldn't see any point in hanging back; I would have felt bad if anyone had been left behind, but being stranded myself wouldn't have helped anyone. (It wasn't a case of shoving people out of the way in a headlong dash to the gate -- the others were mostly further back on the flight from San Jose and took longer to get off.)
