They turned the Mount Wilson Towercam around today to show the view over the LA Basin, and after dark it's a blazing checker-pattern of golden light. I've seen it once or twice from the air at dusk, and it's amazingly beautiful in its extravagant, light-polluting way. By daylight, on the other hand, particularly on the approach coming back from Hawaii, it's rather dreary and seems to go on for ever ...

I've seen that view of the LA Basin after dark, from pretty much the top of Mount Wilson, in fact. It still strikes me as one of the most extraordinary things I've ever seen.

Yes, it's quite a sight. It's amazing they can still do any serious night-time astronomy up there at all, but you can see why the big modern telescopes are getting built in much more remote places.
