I slept badly last night, and I've been pretty useless today. I seem to be unusual in my reaction to jet lag; I cope much better with eastbound than westbound, as a rule, possibly because I'm a night owl and it's much more disruptive to my life to be flaking out in the early evening and waking up in the early morning than the other way around. Going east mostly just makes me sleepy for a couple of days; going west hits harder and takes longer to get back to normal. I didn't nap this afternoon, which maybe I should have; when I've been able to do that in the past, it has -- contrary to conventional wisdom -- helped a lot.

I've been messing with the new laptop. Not impressed with the HP "Total Care Advisor" widget, which is trying to worry me about the state of the battery -- which appears to be fine, or at least has only gone down by about a quarter in more than two hours -- and kept wanting to download huge driver updates and then not install them properly, or not acknowledge that they were installed. Also had trouble with Cygwin, in which I accidentally downloaded a bunch of stuff I didn't want and then got yet more stuff every time I tried to clean up. (That's not the laptop's fault, though.) Finally I blew away the whole installation and tried again, and this time I think I got just what I wanted -- X, ImageMagick, TeX/LaTex and ssh on top of the default basic package. On the other hand, installing Google Earth was painless, and the latest version lets you go back in time -- all the way to 1992, in the case of my local neighborhood. (I'd love to know when this place was built, but it was obviously earlier than that.)
