Sorry, but Billie Piper was impossibly miscast as Fanny -- who admittedly can't be an easy character to make sympathetic to a modern audience, but to turn her into a buxom galumphing wench isn't the way to go. Apart from "not too bright," I can't imagine what made them think she was right for the part. I don't think I'm tempted to order this one on DVD.

Have you seen the recent BBC "Sense and Sensibility"? I think it's rather good...

Not yet. PBS is airing a complete Austen set; this is the third of what I gather are ITV productions, after a rushed and unattractive Persuasion and a quite decent Northanger Abbey. I know they're using the old Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth; I'm not sure which versions of Emma and Sense and Sensibility we'll get.

I agree. She didn't fit the bill at all. I can't imagine she would be allowed to galumph around like that with Sir Thomas in the house. Silly woman...

I went thru the TV room last night, where it was being taped. The eye candy guys made it look possibly bearable, but when I saw that sulky slumping wench and realized this was not Maria, I was quite startled.

It was really incongruous to see her uttering some of Fanny's more pious lines, too.
