ellarien1) The supplied Java plug-in doesn't work right with Firefox: get the real one from the Sun website. (Symptoms of not-working-right include hanging the browser and suspending all higher web functions for the remainder of the session.)
2) Boot early, boot often. Seems to me that the system is not anywhere near stable and leak-proof enough for the default 'sleep' shutdown mode to be a good idea. This morning, after a busy evening of Google Earth and Photoshop and a night in sleep mode, my machine was running -- noisily -- at 70% CPU while doing nothing at all. A restart fixed that nicely.
[Update: in the spirit of experimentation, I put it to sleep when I went out to the mall. Came back, woke it up, same thing.]
3) One firewall at a time is sufficient.
4) Cygwin, sadly, is flaky, particularly the X part of it.
