As a general rule, I find American English more likely to doubled consonants like that. I usually spell it the British English way myself. I have no idea why.
The single consonants look really strange and uncomfortable to me, as a native BrE speaker -- I keep wanting to lengthen the following vowel -- but I'm trying to abide by AmE spellings for this project. It seems to be almost unanimous for ll in this case, though, so the one author who had a single l has been changed.
