More vacation photos

Whirlowdale park, an hour or so's walk walk through the woods from my mother's house, is not what it used to be, but -- thanks mostly to the efforts of the cafe people, I think -- hasn't entirely reverted to wilderness. Even the Mexican Skunk Cabbage, ugly smelly stuff though it is, has a certain attraction if you look at it right.

That used to be one of my favourite Sheffield parks (I'm enjoying your photo tour by the way) but I haven't been there for years.

We tend to go up there every year because it makes a good goal for a walk in the woods. It's a little less depressing than it used to be, of recent years. They keep up the formal bedding on the lawn below the terrace (surrounded by rabbit-proof fencing, this year) and make some token effort with the rose garden, but the lily pond silts up more every year and the rock garden is full of weeds and overgrown bushes. The really sad one is the Quarry Gardens next door, which used to be a little gem and has gone to rack and ruin; we don't even bother going in there any more.
