ellarien: two laptops (computers2)
Tentatively named Diamond, after the university world in the WIP. (Small colonies, only partial terraforming; they specialize, OK? Doesn't mean the whole planet is one vast institution of higher learning, but it's the place's main claim to fame.)

I think I should feed myself before I start setting it up. I just hope we don't get thunderstorms tonight, as this beast will be less tolerant of unexpected power outages than the laptops. It's been very humid today, but no real rain so far.

Update: CPU fan failure. Aaargh! Now to dig out the support plan info on the other machine and try to get this sorted out ....

Update to update: Talked to a nice young man, probably in India, who walked me through reattaching the CPU fan, which apparently hadn't been screwed in and was just floating around loose with the heatsink attached. Now up and running, if not exactly optimized. Now editing this from Firefox on Diamond.

Update^3: And then, for entirely non-obvious reasons, after happily using it to download Firefox, Thunderbird, and about 95% of OpenOffice, it decided it didn't like my wireless network after all, and then that it didn't exist,
this while still being able to see one -- and intermittently a couple more -- of the neighboring ones. Admittedly, putting a wireless antenna down at the bottom of the back of a tower that's going to live under a desk seems suboptimal ...

I'm going to bed. Tomorrow if it's still being awkward I'll try bringing the whole thing into the living room too see if that helps. (The cable connection and modem are in the living room, and so is the router; the desk is in the study, so plugging in a network cable isn't really an option.

And it's working again, but not in a position where it can sit, long-term.

Mission Statement

Reading, writing, plant photography, and the small details of my life, with digressions into science and computing.
