The last couple of years around this time, I've been spending my lunch hours in ecstatic contemplation of the flowers around campus; this time last year the orchid trees were already in bloom. This year, the January frosts have severely cramped the orchid trees' style, if not killed them off outright; they're just standing around with their dead leaves dangling, looking sad. There isn't much to be seen around campus but battered pansies; even the everlasting hibiscus bushes seem to be withered to the root. At least the pear blossom appeared on schedule, and the brave little peach tree down by the mathematics building had its few days of glory.
