Soft air; soft light; soft grey sky. A playful wind snatched at hair and papers but did not chill the skin.

A table of high-end tchotchkes stands near the entrance of the campus bookstore. Currently it's mostly occupied by Painted Ponies, which is bizarre enough in itself, but colourful and pretty, with some vivid-coloured Oaxacan wooden sculptures on the far side. In the corner, though, there's a little Mexican idol, all arms and jaguar heads in unprepossessing fake grey stone, just sitting there without any explanation or anything else like it within sight, waiting for someone to take it home and make it part of her story. I'm not its person, or its author, but there has to be a story there.

Dinner

You might have noticed that I don't post much about food; this is mostly because I don't find it all that interesting (sorry!) and I really, really don't cook much beyond heating things. I also have some odd habits, like using plain (no sauce, no added fat) boiled pasta -- rainbow fusilli, usually -- as a starchy side and cooking it in the same pan as the frozen veggies. At the moment supplies are a little low, as I didn't get to the grocery store at the weekend, so I'm improvising a bit. Tonight's dinner was a two-egg omelette, with a little basil and rather a lot of pepper, and a 3oz can of chicken on top, served with cheese tortellini and 'Tuscan style' frozen vegetables (broccoli, mushrooms, red peppers, and onions). My little omelette pan is getting less and less non-stick every time I use it, but it wasn't bad. At least I haven't yet got to the point of dumping out a can of sweet corn and one of chicken and calling that dinner, but that may well happen tomorrow or Thursday.

(Oh, and I'd better go and rescue the tortelli that fell down the hole in the stovetop!)
