I must have slept in an awkward position last night, and without sufficient covers; I woke up with a lot of pain and stiffness in the neck and left shoulder. It wasn't bad enough to stop me getting dressed and going in to work (though I did discover when I got there that I had omitted both to zip my new pants and remove the tag), but halfway through the Thursday morning meeting it spasmed and I couldn't find a comfortable position at all. My very kind boss went out and bought me a heating pad, and I spent most of the rest of the day with that draped over my shoulder, trying without much success to find a comfortable typing position. (It's surprisingly hard to manage keyboard and mouse with limited movement in one arm.) I didn't realize until I saw myself in the bathroom mirror just how far I was leaning over to one side; I'm a bit lopsided at the best of times, but this is ridiculous.

I came home early, and am trying Ibuprofen. (Will also try not to spend the whole evening messing with the computer. Typing this on Old Laptop, which is at least lighter.)

New Bujold fantasy on the way: Here

The next novel by Patricia McKillip, Solstice Wood now has cover art up at Amazon -- and it's a contemporary fantasy, for a change.

The campus bookstore has stacks of the movie-cover edition of The Chronicles of Narnia.

Also, Dava Sobel, author of Longitude and Galileo's Daughter has a new book out, about the solar system. It's beautifully produced, obviously aimed for the holiday gift market, but I don't think that astronomers are the target audience.

Mission Statement

Reading, writing, plant photography, and the small details of my life, with digressions into science and computing.
