I had no idea what this was until pollyc identified it, but there's a lot of it around, in various colourways. Butterflies seem to like it. This clump is just outside the entrance to my workplace that I usually use. It's surprisingly difficult to photograph, being small, highly three-dimensional, and prone to quivering in the slightest breeze.
I'm familiar with the dawn chorus, but I've only recently started noticing that around here we get a sunset chorus too -- a brief flurry of chirping and twittering as the birds settle in for the night. I was at an outdoor memorial this evening, and the increase in volume just before the light faded was very obvious. It came with a little rising in the wind, too, that rustled the branches and the windchimes and brought a snatch of the music of falling water.
