Cold bright morning, with a dusting of snow on the mountains. Work on the ramada resumed about 7.30 am, with a fanfare of hammers and power screwdrivers. I can understand starting outdoor work indecently early when it's going to be 100F by lunchtime, but in November?

I picked up a few things at the grocery store this morning, including a cherry pie intended for Thanksgiving dinner with colleagues. The bakery there has some nice things. Unfortunately, I forgot that a deep-filled, lattice-crust fruit pie was likely to be less indestructible than their bear claw coffee cake, and by the time I got home it was edible (apart from the bits of filling that escaped) but no longer presentable. So it looks as though I'll be eating pie for dessert for a few days.

This evening, I got up from crocheting and trailed a dozen yards of thread, hooked over a sweater button, half way across the apartment. Crochet thread being what it was, it formed a knot of gordian complexity, with which I eventually had to deal in the traditional manner, so the doily will end up with two more loose ends that it needed to have.

Other than that, I spent much of the day playing Myst IV.

Cell Phone Virus

The bit that tickled my funny-bone:

Once installed the program replaces all the icons on the main page with skulls and replaces all the working applications, such as contacts, calendar, notebook etc with non-working versions so the phone becomes almost useless.

The only thing the phone can do is make and take calls.

OK, I realize that phones are getting more like PDAs all the time, but still.

Mission Statement

Reading, writing, plant photography, and the small details of my life, with digressions into science and computing.
