There were two packages waiting for me when I got to work this morning, including McKillip's Solstice Wood and a used copy of Doris Egan's Ivory trilogy. There was also a chocolate heart in my mailbox, but I think everyone got one of those. Also, my Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVDs have shipped!
Amazon is trying to sell me power tools and a novel by Jennifer Wingert, a new author they seem to think belongs in the same corner as Elizabeth Bear and Karen Traviss. Opinions on that? The reviews seem mixed.
I end up watching, or half-watching, almost the whole thing because they mix the good and boring bits so thoroughly. Ski jumping looks a lot like flying. Bobsled racing, (or pretty much any kind of sled racing) on the other hand, is not my idea of gripping television; one run looks exactly like the next as far as I can tell. I'm somewhat bemused by the lengths to which the competitors in general will go to cultivate esoteric and not exactly applicable skills for the sake of ... whatever it is they do it for.
