The campus grass has faded to a pale tawny shade, like old parchment; the roses and hibiscus are on hiatus. The occasional frosts haven't been hard enough to bother the bougainvillea, but some of the pansies are looking a little raddled. I was contemplating a bed of them this lunchtime, and exchanged a few words with one of the groundskeepers, who was preparing to do some deadheading. I remember deadheading pansies, but in the gardens of my childhood it was usually only two or three plants; I can hardly imagine tackling the yards and yards of them all over the campus.
