It can turn cool any time it wants

I had another go at the mall today, with rather more success. It would be nice if it was cool enough to wear the new acquisitions, but that probably won't happen for another month or so. (If I waited until November to shop for winter clothes, there'd be nothing but party dresses.) The trouble with this fall's fashions, nice as they are, is that they're so very distinctive, making it hard to find things that blend into my ongoing wardrobe and raising the worry that they'll be very obviously outmoded in a couple of years.
There was a post I wrote after I went shopping in England in August that got lost in the disk crash before I could post it. In it, I mused that, judging by the longevity of some of the clothes I bought in my early twenties, I could be wearing the things I shop for now well into my fifties. This is a rather scary thought.
This afternoon's haul consists of two jackets, one in purple brocaded denim and one in black velvet, a cardigan in my favourite deep red, two pairs of black slacks and a couple of mock-turtle sweaters. Oddly enough, the purple jacket makes sense; it will go nicely with the purple jeans and skirt I bought in England and the other purple skirt from last year (or was it the year before?). The black one is more of an indulgence. I love velvet, and I tried this one on and it felt like an old friend. (If it does as well as the navy blue M&S one I bought in 1984, I could still have that when I'm 60.) As for the pants, I'm still a bit of a novice when it comes to buying those, and altogether ignorant of the finer points. I grabbed three black pairs off the rack in Sears, tried them on, and was amazed and delighted to find that two out of the three actually fitted, so I bought them.
I've also done Sunday Things 1 and 2, and laundry, and made the bed, so I think I've earned West Wing and my strawberry cheesecake, even if the place is still a mess.
