It would help if the manufacturers would just label things by waist and hip (and bust where applicable) measurements instead of sticking on arbitrary numbers.
My grandmother was a professional dressmaker; my mother made most of our clothes when I was a child; I'm terrified of sewing machines and can just about sew on a stray button. I have the good fortune to be close enough to a canonical size that I can usually buy off-the-peg without too many problems, but current trends are making it harder.
Hmm. Now I'm imagining a sew-on-demand machine; select your style, dial in the measurements, wander off for a cup of coffee and pick up the garment half an hour later.
