I've been back a week, and I've already had more than enough of 100-degree weather and thirty per cent humidity. It wouldn't be so bad if it would actually rain, but though the skies cloud over from time to time, and I think I even heard a brief mutter of thunder this afternoon, the rain-gauge stays obstinately empty.

An hour or two after I posted that we did get a little rain in midtown -- a hundredth of an inch in the campus gauge, which is not what I call a proper monsoon-breaking storm.

It's never easy for me to adjust when I've come back from a few weeks of treating 65-70 as shirtsleeve weather.

The campus finally got half an inch -- and a power outage -- on Monday night. I think one that does count, but it just seemed to make yesterday stickier.
