I don't know what was encouraging them to pose. Maybe it was just the perfect temperature. (And the light was good enough for a pretty short exposure.)

It's a wonder I didn't either slip on the rocks or go ankle-deep into the bit of pond that's escaping, but the main trick was getting it lined up without random students in the background. The camera did the exposure all by itself, so I can't claim credit for that. We're getting into one of the better times of year for light, though.

Super photo! How close were you and what lens did you use?

I need a good (but also fairly inexpensive) macro lens for my Rebel XSi. I prefer a short tele zoom. I wish I could find one like the 28-85 I used on my AE-1 program all those years ago (I bought it a quarter of a century ago -- good lord!).

Thank you! I think I was close enough to touch this one, and using macro mode -- it's a big critter. The camera is a Panasonic Lumix TZ-4, with a built in wide-angle, 10x zoom lens -- not bad for a pocket-sized point-and-shoot.
