I spent a lot of my childhood in the nineteenth century too, or with Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, neither of whom went in much for tight-third. I've seen interesting things done with tight-third --- by Bujold, for example, or Barbara Hambly --- but I do think it can be bland in less expert hands.
Part of the trouble with the current WIP, when I let myself stop long enough to think about it, is that I'm stuck with one POV character, who happens to be half my age.
