According to a notice in the laundry room, my apartment complex is going to become gated in the near future. I can see a couple of problems with this. The gates will be on the vehicle entrances, of course. There are no official pedestrian entrances; there isn't even sidewalk up to the main gate, just lawn which usually has sprinklers going in the morning. There are a number of unofficial pedestrian accesses, one of which is the way I (along with most everyone else who uses the bus and lives in the back half of the complex) normally come and go. This gating exercise therefore strikes me as being somewhat pointless if they don't also block the unofficial pedestrian approaches, and extremely inconvenient if they do. (They could make them official and install keyed gates, I suppose, but I doubt they will, particularly as the one I use lets out onto what is technically someone else's property -- the parking lot of a block of medical offices.)
