24386 words, in the end. Nearly ten years, five computers and a PDA later, I have a full-length draft of the thing I started in the temporary apartment when I first moved to Tucson.

(Also, I've written 24386 words since Feb 1st, and 38,664 since Christmas, taking Vortex and Ambassador together.)

Okay, it's not strictly a WIP any more, but I thought I'd do this anyway:

Turn to page 123 in your work-in-progress. (If you haven't gotten to page 123 yet, then turn to page 23. If you haven't gotten there yet, then get busy and write page 23.) Count down four sentences and then instead of just the fifth sentence, give us the whole paragraph.

It took Nelson a moment to realize what he was seeing. Then the images behind the window -- tubes, wires, banks of glittering lights, a grey-pale face half-hidden behind an oxygen mask, a tangle of lank dark hair -- assembled themselves into a picture, and he knew. “Yes.” It was hard to find breath or voice for the words. “Yes, that’s my wife. What -- what happened to her?”

Next, back to Defector, which only goes back to 2001 and Old Laptop, and currently has 7,453 words.
