Not so chilly in the meeting room today, but there were snow flurries and sleety rain going on outside. It's raining again now, but it's supposed to freeze again tonight. I hope that doesn't mean too much black ice. People have airports to get to tomorrow, and the trains are already in some disarray.

Early this morning, probably at sunrise, I heard the waterfowl rising from the lake with a great honking and flapping, The sound instantly took me back about twenty-five years, to the time when I was an undergraduate living in the halls [dorms] just up the road; the freedom and intensity and mildly chilly discomfort of it; the scent of rancid butter in the kitchen and peeling paint on wet metal window frames; grey vinyl flooring and a red-brown rug and a cheerful copper-colored wastepaper bin; quantum mechanics textbooks all over the bed in the middle of the night; water rattling through the pipes as someone drew a bath down the hall.

This may well be the last post before I get home late on Saturday night. (For Tucson values of home. Being here reminds me strongly that home is a multi-valued function, a waveform that refused ever quite to collapse.)
