I went shopping for winter shoes today, as one of my two decent pairs cracked across the soles sometime last spring. I wouldn't have thought it possible, but the manufacturers have come up with new ways to make women's shoes hideous and/or unwearable, or at least new ways of combining some of the worst offences of the last thirty years. Six-inch cork wedges. Huge clumpy heels. Bright yellow things with buckles, rather like the Clarks' sandals I used to wear as a child, but adult-sized. And, of course, lots of backless or near-backless shoe-like objects. I did eventually find a couple of pairs that were leather and sufficiently comfortable, and not actively repellent to look at; I gave up years ago on the idea of finding shoes I actually like.
I also picked up a set of plastic knitting needles, because I wanted some short ones in a US size 8 (5mm). I've never knitted with translucent needles before, and it feels distinctly odd.
