The recent rains seem to have encouraged the barrel cacti; I'm sure the flowers are bigger than they were this time last year, when we were still waiting for the monsoon to start.

It rained for quite a lot of yesterday, and it was raining again, with thunder and lightning, this morning. This is a Good Thing. Among other benefits, the recent moisture seems to have encouraged the beavertail cactus in the corner garden near the office to a second flush of pellucid pink flowers.

My colleague needed something from the Apple Store, which is in the tony new mall up in the Foothills, and I decided I wanted a power adapter for my iPod, so we detoured up there on the way home. The place is only two or three years old, and much too upscale to be accessible by bus, so I'd never been there before; it was quite pleasant on a mellow grey summer evening. I remain quite content to do my regular shopping at Safeway, the discount stores, and my more modest local mall, though.

This is my last weekend at home before the summer odyssey, so there is lots to do -- notably piles and piles of laundry, but also other general fettling and organization. Also I'd like to finish reading the various books I'm in the middle of -- currently Moonwise, Mansfield Park, and Wild Swans -- before I head over the Atlantic.
