Broken glass as art

There's a new sculpture on campus, outside the new extension to the Optical Sciences building. It consists of four hefty chunks -- the size of small boulders -- of what the label describes as 'Unannealed pyrex, part of a pour by the Corning factory, 1935.' This lunchtime I went over to have a look. The chunks are lovely objects, their surfaces whorled and knapped with conchoid fractures, their depths pale greenish-gold and bewildered with reflections.
