On the roof

We had our Wednesday lunchtime meeting on the roof today.

The building where I work is mostly on one level, sprawling over most of a small block, but there is some basement, designated as a fallout shelter. There's also a whole other building on the roof, a temporary-looking assemblage of wooden-walled office huts; the staircase opens on a fenced-in gangway leading across the roof to the entrance. Inside it's a maze of cubicles and cabinets and odd stacks of equipment, desks and whiteboards and government notices; a whole little office world leading a mostly-separate existence up there. The last time I was up there, several years ago, even the intranet didn't talk to the rest of the building. (I'm not sure if they have their own bathrooms; I've never needed to find out.) A row of clocks hangs in the hall outside the conference room: Vancouver; Hawaii; Washington; Chile.

I think, though I'm not sure, that that conference room was where I spent the first morning of my first visit to Tucson, nearly ten years ago now. (If not, either there's another upstairs conference room somewhere that I've never seen since, or I'm confabulating something.) The rest of that meeting was definitely somewhere else, though.
