In the glasshouses at the Atlanta Botanic Gardens, January 2000.

We had a Sunday morning to kill before going to the airport, and spent it in the gardens. The outside was bleak but attractive; frogs seemed to be a major theme, both as statuary outdoors and in tanks in the conservatory; I brought home a little china one as a souvenir. It wasn't the best day for photography, but this display of orchids came out nicely.

In a meeting all day, among a familiar crowd, with wireless internet at my fingertips and a good supply of coffee and cookies; a bit of useful networking in the breaks. Not a bad day at all, really.

There are certain traditions involved in a group trip to Stanford, particularly when we stay at this motel. Prominent among them are browsing around the Fry's Electronics across the street and eating at the Fish Market next door; we observed both this evening. I'm becoming somewhat serious in my contemplation of digital cameras. I don't want anything really fancy, but they're reaching the point where I could find something more than adequate at an affordable price. Dinner was good, too. Our Uzbek colleagues were a bit flummoxed by the menu, but seemed to enjoy themselves.

While I look at 3Mpixel cameras and our group struggles with managing a few tens of Terabytes of storage, others are contemplating a telescope that "will generate an awesome 30 terabytes of data per night from a three billion-pixel digital camera".
