ellarien... buy $35 USB cables, even if the connectors are gold-plated.
Unfortunately, those were the cheapest Best Buy had to offer, and as printers seem not to be made with parallel connectors any more, we needed one.
If I'd thought of it, I could probably have looked around the store a bit and found a gadget at half the price that came with a usable cable included. There's something distinctly odd, these days, about the tradition that printers don't come with cables when everything else does. What we actually did was go over the road to Target and pick one up for $15.
